Martifer Solar completes two photovoltaic plants in Portugal with a total capacity of 22.4 MWp

Martifer Solar has today inaugurated two solar photovoltaic plants in the Algarve region of Portugal, with a total capacity of 22.4 MWp, developed, built and operated for a fund managed by BNP Paribas Clean Energy Partners.

The plants, located in Avalades (Silves) and Ferreiras (Albufeira), will avoid the emission of over 14,000 tons of CO2, by producing 37.4 GWh/year, which would correspond to using 22,000 barrels of oil and is the equivalent of the domestic power consumption of over 17,500 people.

"These two projects are of utmost importance for Martifer Solar and Portugal and therefore reinforce our commitment to the country, contributing to the creation of jobs and allowing a more sustainable national energy balance. It also confirms the potential of our country in the field of photovoltaic solar energy," said Henrique Rodrigues, CEO of Martifer Solar.

"As a part of our strategy we saw these projects in Portugal as an excellent opportunity to increase and diversify our portfolio of renewable energy projects. We saw in Martifer Solar a valuable and reliable partner with the capacity to add value from the beginning and throughout the lifetime of the projects. It was undoubtedly a winning bet to work with such a committed company,” said Joost Bergsma, CEO of BNP Paribas Clean Energy Partners.

The Avalades solar plant, which is one of the largest in Portugal covering an area of over 41 hectares, consists of 66,080 modules and has the capacity of 15.6 MWp, thus preventing emissions of approximately 10,000 tons of CO2 per year and producing enough electricity for the needs of around 12,200 people.

The Ferreiras solar plant consisting of 28,320 modules, in an area of over 16 hectares, with a production capacity of 6.8 MWp, prevents the emission of around 4,000 tons of CO2 per year and produces enough energy for the needs of around 5,300 people.

The construction of the two solar plants involved a total of 200 workers; 120 in Avalades and 80 in Ferreiras. Operation and maintenance services, in charge of Martifer Solar, will be provided by more than 10 people.

BNP Paribas Clean Energy Partners and Martifer Solar agree that the cooperation of the Municipal Councils where the solar plants are located was essential to the success of these projects, as was that of other organizations that directly contributed to the development and connection of the solar plants, thus proving that Portugal is a reliable country in which to invest.
