Martifer delivers on Sunday the first stadium for the Brazil World Cup

Martifer Construções Metálicas Ltda, subsidiary of Martifer Metallic Constructions in Brazil, concluded the construction of the roof of the Castelão Stadium, one of the twelve stadiums of the 2014 World Cup which will take place in Brazil, an infrastructure that will be inaugurated on December 16th by the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff.

After the inauguration of the Grêmio Stadium, which also counted with Martifer’s participation, the Castelão Stadium is the first 2014 World Cup Stadium to be concluded and delivered to the owner, in a complex project, executed on time. The stadium will host, in 2013, some of the Confederation Cup’s games, which will also take place in Brazil.

Located in Fortaleza, the stadium has 67 thousand seats and represented a total investment of around 519 million Real (193 million euros). Besides the steel structure for the roof (over 2 000 tons), Martifer was also responsible for the installation of 34 000 sqm of roof cladding, produced in Martifer’s factories. Martifer’s works were concluded in almost a year.

"Martifer’s participation in projects with this size is very important, not only for the Group, but also for Portuguese companies, which take advantage of the quality, accuracy and efficiency shown by the company in the international markets”, stated Jorge Martins, Vice-President of the Group’s Board, which will also be in the Ceremony.

Martifer has an industrial unit in Brazil, with a total production capacity of 12 000 tons of steel structure per year, and has already an order book of 296 million Real (110 million euros) in the country, in which are included not only the Castelão Stadium, but also three other stadiums (Grêmio, Fonte Nova and Manaus), an industrial unit and two shopping centres. From the ongoing projects, the construction of the Transcarioca Bridges and Museu do Amanhã (Tomorrow’s Museum), both in Rio de Janeiro, should be highlighted.

"Brazil is currently our top market in terms of  order book, which shows that our investment in an industrial unit in the country was the right choice, and crucial to the fulfilment of the Group’s strategic goals”, added Jorge Martins.

So far, Martifer has participated in the construction of the steel structures and roofs of several Euro 2004 stadiums, namely the Dragão Stadium, Alvalade XXI Stadium, Luz Stadium and Aveiro Stadium. Internationally, it has already participated in several sports facilities, namely in Spain, with Caja Magica (Madrid), in France, with the Lille and the Lyon stadiums, in Poland, with the Gfansk stadium, in the UK, with the Scottish Hydro Arena and, more recently, in Saudi Arabia, with the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. Some of these projects required bold and complex engineering projects that allowed  to the Group to become a worldwide player in this field.
